What are Fingerprints?

Fingerprints are the impression that your finger makes when you place in on a surface, as the top layer of the skin on the finger is covered with ridges and valleys.

These valleys and ridges are swirling and twisting, and patterns created by these fingerprints are unique to every person. No two people have the same pattern of fingerprint, meaning that no two people will be able to open the same lock as the same person.

For this reason, biometrics fingerprint identification is one of the most effective methods of biometric access control. Seeing as no two people have the same fingerprints, there is no risk of the fingerprints being confused by the biometrics software that matches fingerprints to identify the person trying to gain access to a locked door or safe.

Are there downsides to biometrics fingerprint systems?

As with any locking system, there are a number of downsides that make working with a bio metrics fingerprint system slightly complex:

1. Optical scanners are used to determine if the fingerprint being scanned is allowed to gain entrance, but an optical scanner can only register the print itself and not the shape of the finger. A picture can be placed against the optical scanner, and it will be fooled.

2. For this reason, a number of the high end biometric fingerprint scanners use gel pads, pulse sensors, and heat sensors to determine if the finger on the scanner is real or if it is simply a picture. These biometric fingerprint sensors can in turn be circumvented by placing a mold made of gel or silicon over the finger.

3. In cold climates, there is a risk that the heat sensors will not work to pick up fingerprints, as it is simply too cold for the heat sensors to sense anything.

4. The fingerprint scanner may not work due to its proximity to a capacitive scanner.

5. The FAR, or false accept rate, of the fingerprint scanners is much higher than with other biometric scanning devices.

Biometrics thumb locks may not be as reliable as retina scanners or palm scanners, but they are more effective than a facial recognition scanner.

Using any form of biometrics is effective, but fingerprinting is the most convenient biometrics scanner.

Thanks to the fact that the finger is at the end of the arm, all that you need to do to open the lock is to place the finger on the scanner as you reach to open the door. It is much more convenient than other forms of locks, and thus one of the most popular forms of biometric locks.
